What January is like
January is the wettest and quietest month on Milos. Days are mild by northern European standards, but rain comes in bursts and strong north winds can cancel ferries for a day or two. Most hotels, beach bars and many tavernas close for the winter; Adamas and Plaka keep a handful of places open for locals.
Swimming and beaches
The sea averages 17°C in January. Cold: brief dips or a wetsuit. Swimming is for those used to cool water; the coast is better for walks and photos this time of year.
What to pack
A waterproof jacket, a warm layer for the evenings and the ferry deck, and shoes that grip on wet rock.
