Milos has no bridge, no tunnel, no road connection to the mainland. That's exactly what keeps it authentic. But it also means a bit of preparation is needed — especially if you're travelling in July or August, when tickets sell out weeks in advance.
Two options: ferry from Piraeus (the most popular) or flight from Athens (faster, but fewer connections). Let's look at both in detail.
🚢 By ferry — The most popular option
The ferry from Piraeus is the classic way to reach Milos. Daily sailings throughout summer, and several per week in winter.
How long does it take?
- Regular ferry — ~7 hours. Ideal if you travel overnight so you don't lose a day.
- High-speed ferry — ~3.5 hours. SeaJets and Hellenic Seaways. More expensive, but saves time.
Which companies?
- ANEK Lines — overnight sailings, good prices
- SeaJets — high-speed, mainly in summer
- Golden Star Ferries — daytime sailings
- Hellenic Seaways — high-speed from Piraeus
Can I arrive from other islands?
Yes — Milos is connected to Santorini, Sifnos, Serifos, Kimolos and other Cycladic islands. If you're island hopping, it fits perfectly into the route.
Insider tip: The overnight ferry (departure ~21:00 from Piraeus, arrival ~04:00 in Milos) is the favourite choice of locals — you sleep on board and wake up in Milos. You save a full day of travel.
✈️ By plane — The fast option
Milos Airport (code MLO) is 4 kilometres from Adamas. Small, relaxed, no queues — but with fewer connections than you might expect.
From Athens
- Flight duration: ~40 minutes
- Airline: Sky Express (mainly) — daily flights in summer
- Prices: from ~€60 if booked early, but they rise quickly
Charter flights
In summer there are direct charter flights from European cities (London, Zurich, Amsterdam). Check on Skyscanner or with your tour operator.
Insider tip: Flights to Milos sell out very fast in July and August. If you're travelling in peak season, book 2–3 months in advance.
🚗 Getting around the island
Once you arrive, you'll need a way to explore. The local bus (KTEL) covers the main routes, but for beaches like Sarakiniko or Tsigrado you'll need your own vehicle.
Car rental
The best option. Many agencies in Adamas and at the airport. Book ahead in August.
Scooter / ATV
Ideal for couples. Be careful on unpaved roads — some beaches have tricky access.
Local bus (KTEL)
Covers Adamas, Plaka, Tripiti, Pollonia. Doesn't reach most beaches.
Boat tours
For beaches like Kleftiko and Sykia Cave, a boat is the only option. Departures in the morning from Adamas.
📋 Tips so you don't miss your connection
Book tickets early — especially July–August
High-speed ferries sell out 2–3 weeks in advance. Regular ferries last longer, but they fill up too.
Check for meltemi winds before taking a high-speed ferry
Strong northerly winds cause cancellations on fast ferries. If you have a tight schedule, choose a regular ferry or a flight.
Board the ferry 30 minutes before departure
Especially if you have a car. Vehicle boarding happens first and the ramp closes early.
Do online check-in for your flight
MLO airport is small — but at peak summer it can get chaotic without pre-check-in.
Have a backup plan for cancellations
Weather cancellations are not rare. Keep the ferry company's number handy and check the status in the morning.
Don't leave it to the last minute
Milos is one of the most popular islands in the Cyclades — and ticket availability proves it. Book online, skip the port queues and start your holiday relaxed.
