Car Rental in Milos

Most of Milos' best beaches are nowhere near a bus stop. This guide covers whether you need a car, when an ATV makes more sense, which roads to watch out for, and how to rent without surprises.

Short answer: yes, rent something. The bus links Adamas, Plaka, Tripiti and Pollonia, but Sarakiniko at sunset, Tsigrado, Firiplaka and the whole wild west of the island are only practical with your own wheels.

๐Ÿš— Car, ATV or scooter?

๐Ÿš—

Car

Best for families, groups and anyone staying more than a few days. Air conditioning, shade for your things, and safe on the main roads. A small car is easiest to park in July and August.

๐Ÿš™

4x4 / SUV

Worth it if you plan to explore the west of the island, where most roads are dirt tracks. Costs more and books out first in peak season.

๐Ÿ

ATV (quad)

Popular with couples and good on rough tracks. Hot and dusty in midsummer, no luggage space, and tiring on longer drives. Usually rented directly from agencies in Adamas.

๐Ÿ›ต

Scooter

Cheap and easy to park, fine for Adamas, Plaka and the paved beaches. Not for dirt roads, and the meltemi makes some stretches tiring.

๐Ÿชช

Check your licence. A car licence does not automatically let you ride a scooter or quad. Ask the agency what your licence covers before you sign: if you ride without the right category, the insurance won't pay out after an accident. Helmets are compulsory on scooters and quads.

๐Ÿ›ฃ Roads and beaches

The east of Milos is easy driving: paved roads link Adamas, Plaka, Pollonia and the popular beaches of the north and south coast. Distances are short. Adamas to Pollonia or to Paleochori takes around 20 minutes.

The west is different. Past the main bay, most roads turn to dirt, there are no shops or petrol stations, and mobile signal comes and goes. These beaches have a rough last stretch:

An ordinary car can manage many of them in dry weather if you drive slowly, but check the track on foot before tackling a steep or rutted section. After winter rain some are only passable with a 4x4.

โš ๏ธ

Read the insurance terms. Many rental contracts, even with full cover, exclude damage on unpaved roads, to tyres and to the underside of the car. If you plan to explore the west, ask about it before you book, or pick a company that allows dirt roads.

No car needed

Some of the most famous spots can't be reached by road at all. For these you need a boat trip from Adamas, so don't rent a car just for them:

๐Ÿ“ Picking up the car

  • At the port (Adamas): most agencies have offices along the harbour and will meet your ferry, even late at night, if you give them your arrival time.
  • At the airport (MLO): about 5 km from Adamas. Some companies have a desk, others bring the car to arrivals.
  • At your hotel: many local agencies deliver and collect for free or for a small fee.

What you'll need

  • A driving licence held for at least one year (some companies ask for more).
  • Drivers are usually 21 or older, and under-25s often pay a young driver fee.
  • If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Many desks ask for it, and it's required by law for many non-EU licences.
  • A credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Debit cards are often not accepted.

๐Ÿ“‹ Tips for driving in Milos

01

Book early for July and August

Milos has a limited number of rental cars. In peak season small cars and 4x4s sell out weeks ahead, and walk-in prices are much higher.

02

Fill up before heading west

Petrol stations are around Adamas and on the main roads in the east. There is nothing on the dirt roads of the west.

03

Park outside Plaka and arrive early at Sarakiniko

Plaka's lanes are pedestrian only, so use the car park at the edge of the village. Sarakiniko's parking fills up by late morning and again before sunset.

04

Take photos at pickup

Photograph every side of the car, the wheels and the fuel gauge before you drive off, and again when you return it.

05

Don't leave anything in the car

Theft is rare, but beach car parks are unattended. Keep valuables with you or out of sight.

Book your car before you arrive

Compare prices from local and international agencies on Milos, and have the car waiting for you at the port or the airport.
